Talabani to Attend Summit on Terrorism in Iran

Talabani will fly to Tehran in late Ordibehesht (April 21- May 21) to participate in the international “Global Alliance against Terrorism for a Just Peace” conference, which runs from May 14 to 15, Mehr news agency reported on Tuesday.

The conference is organized by the Islamic World Peace Forum in cooperation with the College of International Studies of Tehran University.

More than 1,000 Iranian and foreign figures and thinkers are expected to be in attendance.

The conference comes as Iran has strongly condemned Western countries' double standards towards terrorism, describing such policies as one of the main reasons behind the spread of terrorism.

Addressing the annual meeting of the UN Security Council's Counter-Terrorism Committee On April 11, Iran's Deputy Ambassador to the UN Eshaq Ale-Habib said that certain Western powers continue to take advantage of terrorist activities and groups to accomplish their political objectives and pile up pressure on other countries.

He referred to the West's support of the terrorist Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) as an instance of such discrimination and said, “Unfortunately, these countries do not hesitate to negotiate and cooperate with terrorists in an attempt to shield their own interests.”

The MKO was founded in Iran in the 1960s, but its members fled to Iraq in the 1980s after carrying out a series of assassinations and bombings inside the country.

Following the ouster of Saddam in 2003, the Iraqi government set numerous deadlines for the terrorist group to leave the country but MKO has managed to maintain Camp Ashraf due to US backing.
