Iran MP Slams [P]GCC Poor Performance

“The council had a very poor performance on freedom-seeking movements of the people in Muslim and Arab countries,” a member of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Mohammad Karim Abedi said.

“The [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council remains silent and shows no reaction to the brutal repression of the oppressed Bahraini people and other Muslim nations,” he added.

The Iranian lawmaker denounced as “baseless and unfounded” a complaint filed by the PGCC about Iran's meddling in other countries' internal affairs and pointed out that Tehran got used to the council's contradictory and groundless attitude.

On April 17, ambassadors of the council complained in separate letters to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and President of the Security Council Nestor Osorio of Colombia about Iran's interference in their internal affairs.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast refuted the council's meddling claims as unfounded and false, saying, “It is surprising that in the statement issued by the [P]GCC it has been claimed that Iran interferes in regional affairs, this is while the military forces of some members of the council have disregarded international law and conventions, interfered in the internal affairs of their neighboring country and cracked down on defenseless men and women.”

In a letter to the UN chief about Bahrain's situation on April 15, Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi called on the Ban to take “serious and immediate action” to stop the killing of people in the Persian Gulf countries.
