Iran Urges IPU to Set up Bahrain CMTE

In a telephone conversation with IPU President Theo-Ben Gurirab on Wednesday, Larijani expressed concern over the “tragic” humanitarian disaster in Bahrain and called for immediate formation of an “impartial” committee to investigate the 'catastrophe.

The Iranian Majlis speaker said that killing of protesters, raping of women and destruction of mosques in Bahrain were instances of violation of human rights and urged the IPU to adopt a “tough stance” on the crisis in Bahrain.

People in Bahrain have been holding anti-government protests since February 14, demanding constitutional reforms as well as an end to the al-Khalifa monarchy.

The peaceful popular movement in Bahrain has been violently repressed since mid-February, leaving scores of protesters killed and many others missing.

The top Iranian legislator also condemned the invasion of Bahrain by some regional countries and called on the IPU to take measures to help put an end to the military intervention.

“Certain countries in the region are actually accomplices in the massacre of the defenseless people of Bahrain by sending military forces and equipment to Bahrain. The Inter-parliamentary Union should not remain silent on such arbitrary behaviors.”

The IPU president, for his part, expressed concern over the Bahrain crisis and hoped that a committee comprised of impartial organizations and countries would be set up by the IPU to find a solution to the Bahrain crisis.

To help the Bahraini government crush the anti-government protests, neighboring Arab states of Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait deployed their troops to the small Persian Gulf kingdom.

Established in 1889, the Inter-parliamentary Union works for peace, cooperation and the establishment of democracy in close contact with the UN.
