Iran Key Sponsor of Autonomous ME: Envoy

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, as a friend and brother [country] for the Palestinian nation, is the main supporter of ...independence in the Middle East,” Salah Zawawi told IRNA on Thursday.

The envoy also lauded Iran's support for the recent unity agreement between main Palestinian factions, Hamas and Fatah.

On Wednesday, Palestine's Hamas and Fatah factions reached an understanding in the Egyptian capital of Cairo in forming a transitional Palestinian unity government and holding future elections.

Zawawi made a reference to the recent wave of revolts and anti-government protests in the Middle East and North Africa saying, the unity of Palestinian factions at the time of Islamic awakening in the region is “enormously valuable.”

The Palestinian diplomat reiterated that unity among Palestinian factions is “the only way” to resist Israeli aggressions and to form a Palestinian government.

He further expressed optimism that the unity pact would lead to the establishment of a democratic government and a national Palestinian parliament.

The diplomat also lashed out at the US for its unconditional support of the Israeli regime, which has 'emboldened' Tel Aviv in its “aggressive policies.”

Shortly after the Palestinian unity deal was announced, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas must "choose between peace with Israel or peace with Hamas."

Israel has described the deal as a “red line” crossed by the Palestinian factions and threatened to freeze the transfer of taxes collected by Israel for the Palestinian Authority.

Hamas and Fatah had been at odds since the former won the Palestinian parliamentary elections in January 2006.
