Pakistan MPs Slam US Drone Attacks

During a meeting of parliamentary committee on national security, lawmakers from all major political parties urged the government to adopt a decisive and strict stance toward the US to convince them to halt the drone attacks, a Press TV correspondent reported Friday.

The members of the committee reiterated that the government and public are of the same view regarding the strikes and consider them as violation of the country's sovereignty.

The Lawmakers said US-Pakistan relations will get back to normal only when the unauthorized drone attacks come to an end.

Pakistan's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar also attended the meeting in the Parliament House. She said the government is stepping up diplomatic pressure on the US over the issue.

Pakistani authorities have also asked the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as well as the entire international community to exert pressure on the United States to put an end to the attacks.

Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said “drone missiles cause collateral damage. A few militants are killed, but the majority of victims are innocent citizens."

In the latest official comment by Washington, former CIA director Leon Panetta said the US has no intention of stopping the attacks.

Prominent US-based public policy research organization, The Brookings Institute, suggests that drone attacks may kill “10 or more civilians” for every militant killed.

The US has carried out hundreds of drone strikes in tribal regions bordering Afghanistan claiming they aim at flushing out militancy in the area.
