Canada's Conservative PM Leads Polls

Early results indicate that the party is leading in 167 of 308 electoral districts, up from 143 seats prior to the dissolution of parliament, AFP reported Tuesday.

The New Democratic Party is leading in 104 seats and will, for the first time, form the official opposition.

Harper's minority government was forced into an election following a no-confidence vote in parliament. Opposition parties toppled Harper on the grounds that his Conservative government was tainted by sleaze, had managed the economy poorly and was in contempt of the parliament.

Harper is the third-longest serving Conservative Canadian premier since World War II.
