S Korea Approves EU Trade Deal

The ruling Grand National Party pushed forward the FTA bill in the absence of opposition lawmakers on Wednesday.

The bill was ratified in a vote of 163 against one. The deal is due to take effect on July 1.

Meanwhile, South Korean police have clashed with activists protesting the pact between Seoul and the European Union.

Protesters, including members of the Democratic Labor Party, gathered in front of the parliament in the South Korean capital.

Some opposition lawmakers have even blocked the parliament's main chamber hall to prevent the approval of the FTA later on Wednesday.

Demonstrators believe the deal will hurt South Korean farmers once it takes effect.

Thousands of South Korean farmers have also protested against a free trade deal with the United States over the past months, demanding that the government scrap the agreement.

South Korean farmers have expressed fear that such deals would harm agricultural producers as well as cattle raisers in the country.
