The police car was escorting a bus carrying officials from Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Development Party, who were on their way back to Ankara following an election rally addressed by Erdogan in the city of Kastamonu.

Erdogan had earlier left the gathering by helicopter for another rally in nearby Amasya city.

The police car was completely burned in the attack. Security officials say a hand grenade was hurled at a police car and gun fire opened afterwards. About 22 shell casings were found at the scene.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Turkish PM called the attackers "separatists,'' a reference often used by Turkish authorities to PKK terrorists that wage attacks in the country's southeast, demanding autonomy.

"Those craven hands, minds with no trust in democracy, those who understood that they would not win the ballot, believe that they can succeed by this way," Anatolia quoted Erdogan as saying in Amasya.

Last week, at least 27 people were injured after an armed man opened fire on a group of people attending an election meeting in Turkey's southern city of Samandag.

Turkey is preparing for parliamentary elections on June 12.
