Yemen Parties to Sign [P]GCC Deal

The signing ceremony will be held in Sana'a instead of Saudi capital Riyadh, the Yemeni Defense Ministry said on Thursday, Xinhua reported.

On Saturday, the [P]GCC bloc's Secretary-General Abdullatif bin Rashid al-Zayani failed to persuade Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to ink the deal during his visit to Sana'a.

Under the deal, Saleh, who has faced three months of protests demanding an immediate end to his 33-year authoritarian rule, will leave office within 30 days after signing the accord in exchange for immunity from prosecution.

According to the deal, aimed at solving the country's political crisis, a new government will be formed by the opposition within seven days and should arrange presidential and parliamentary elections within 60 days.

The deal will be signed by representatives of the ruling party, General People's Congress and the opposition's Joint Meeting Parties. But no date has yet been announced for the signing ceremony.

Both parties have sent the names of their representatives to the [P]GCC committee.

The ministry said on its website that once the deal has been signed by both parties and President Saleh, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is also rotating president of the [P]GCC, would then approve the power transition deal.

Meanwhile, anti-government demonstrators have escalated their protests in several cities, including Bayda, Taizz and Aden, voicing their opposition to the [P]GCC deal.

Some 40 percent of Yemen's population live on $2 a day or less and one third is wrestling with chronic hunger.

The death toll in the country since the launch of the revolution has surpassed 300.
