Thai PM Plans Snap General Elections

Vejjajiva announced the plan during a press conference at the Government House in Bangkok on Friday.

This comes as Vejjajiva is expected to submit a royal decree requesting for parliament dissolution to the King.

Elections are expected either in late June or early July.

The vote comes one year after the country plunged into deadly violence in the wake of mass anti-government protests by the opposition group known as Red Shirts.

Around 90 people were killed and hundreds of others were wounded in the clashes.

The main contest is expected to be between Vejjajiva's Democrat Party, and the Pheu Thai Party.

The latter is widely seen as a proxy for former ousted Premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

Red Shirts are largely made up of the supporters of Shinawatra, who was ousted in a military coup in 2006 and later sentenced to two years in jail for alleged corruption.

Thaksin now lives in exile to avoid prison. Nevertheless, the former prime minister remains popular among the rural poor.
