Bulgaria: No Plan to Host US Missile System

That's what Bulgarian Defense Minister Anyu Angelov announced at a military parade that celebrated the National Armed Forces Day. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also attended the event.

As the military spirit “ruled the day”, and with Bulgaria sensitive to the issue of Libya - because 5 Bulgarian nurses were imprisoned there for 8 years - Bulgarian Prime Minister was eager to know if Ban supported the International Criminal Court in its request for an arrest warrant for Cornell Gaddafi.

But justice doesn't mean the UN resolutions justify the killing of Gaddafi's family members. The operations are supposed to be focused on military targets, not civilians, Ban explained.

But that was not the only controversy raised in Bulgaria… While addressing the delegates of the Sofia Platform, an international conference, Ban did not mention the Palestinian issue and was later urged to elaborate upon it.

But experts say, this is not enough - and the UN should be fully prepared for the possibility of Palestinian statehood, which is expected to be put to a vote at the General Assembly in September.

While in Bulgaria, the Secretary General has touched on a wide range of issues, like regional relations, economic development, climate change, the fight against corruption and crime. Ban Ki-moon also met with Bulgaria's President and the Chair of Parliament. He delivered a public lecture, and even traveled to a town in the countryside.

This “quest for popularity” has its logical explanations, observers say.

This is the first visit to by a UN Secretary-General to Bulgaria since 1984. Experts say Mr. Ban Ki-moon has actually embarked on a tour to pave the way for his possible re-election, the perspectives of which seem gloomy now.
