Iranian Union Exported $12bn Last Year

"The union has been able to claim 50 percent of the country's non-oil exporters by increasing the export of its products to USD 12 billion," the union's chief Nima Eslami was quoted by SHANA -- Iran's Oil Ministry's news agency -- as saying on Sunday.

He said the union will focus on sending trade delegation to potential importing nations in a bid to increase the value of their exports in the current year.

Eslami also called on the Iranian government to adapt measures to ease non-oil exports and remove unnecessary bureaucratic procedures that hamper exports.

In March, the head of Iran's Customs Administration, Abbas Memarnejad, announced that the country's non-oil exports had reached a record USD 29 billion in the first 11 months of the previous Iranian calendar year.

According to statistics provided by the International Monetary Fund, despite several rounds of Western sanctions imposed against Tehran over its civilian nuclear program, Iran remains the third-largest country in the Middle East and Central Asia in terms of exports and imports.
