Pakistanis Hold Anti-US Rally

While few people here in Pakistan supported al-Qeada leader Osama bin Laden, who was allegedly killed in a US operation in his compound about 100km north of the capital Islamabad, violation of the country’s sovereignty by the US forces has provoked angry street protests.

The protest, organized by the Pakistan’s main religious party, the Jamaat-e-Islami, not only condemned the US but its collaborators.

The country’s authorities have come under fire over their ignorance of bin Laden’s whereabouts and the US midnight raid.

It is rare in Pakistan that the rightwing parties take such a strong position against the powerful military.

Many opposition parties have also demanded that the country’s leaders must step down over the bin Laden debacle.

Anti-American sentiments are already running high in the country over the US drone strikes in the tribal areas.

But, the Abbottabad operation has fuelled the anger further, as people have called for the end to alliance with the US.

Facing pressure at home and abroad, the government says Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani will speak in the Parliament on Monday about the controversy surrounding Bin Laden's killing.
