Lord Ahmed has said that the British people and Europeans as a whole do not want to see Libya turn to another Afghanistan, the Daily Telegraph reported.

"What has happened in Libya since the 17th of February has horrified people," he said. "There are millions of people in Britain and Europe who want to see this war stopped. We do not want to see Libya becoming another Afghanistan.

"I have spoken to my colleagues in Parliament and the Muslim community who will be joining me in this peace mission to both the government-held west and the rebel-held east," said Lord Ahmed.

The Labour peer said he was in Tripoli, the Libyan capital, to prevent “genocide”.

This is while the Libyan regime is said to be using the event as a propaganda coup to portray a positive image of itself, since it was carrying an extensive coverage of the visit on Libyan state television.

The trip may embarrass Labour leader Ed Miliband since he “has not been consulted about it” at all, according to Lord Ahmed, who said the delegation also includes some Conservatives MPs.

Asked whether he approved of the British government's policy, he said, "I don't condone killing, whether by government forces, rebels [revolutionary forces] or NATO."
