Iran N Reactor Operational in Weeks: Russia

"The final launch of Bushehr is a matter of the coming weeks," said Ryabkov, quoted by RIA Novosti on Thursday.

"This is a longstanding project and so I would refrain from naming concrete dates -- but we are already on the threshold of the full launch of the reactor," he added.

The second consignment of fuel for the Bushehr nuclear power plant was delivered from Russia earlier this month.

Iran initially started injecting fuel into the core of the reactor in October 2010 but engineers began removing fuel rods in late February for safety reasons.

The unloading of the fuel delayed the plant's joining of the national grid that had been initially scheduled for beginning of 2011.

Bushehr, which is Iran's first nuclear power plant, operates under the full supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) has already announced that the facility is quake-proof and will never experience a situation similar to the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan.
