Iran, Chile Discuss Ways to Boost Ties

In a meeting with the visiting Iranian parliamentary delegation on Thursday, Chile's Economy Minister Juan Andres Fontaine and Mining Minister Laurence Golborne pledged to enhance cooperation with Tehran on multiple fronts, such as energy, mining and commerce.

The Chilean ministers in separate meetings with the Iranian officials also explored the venues for enhancement of economic and industrial cooperation and also exchanged views about regional and international developments.

The Iranian delegation presided by head of the Iran-Chile parliamentary friendship group Hossein Amiri headed to Santiago earlier on Saturday as part of a five-day visit at the invitation of the Chilean officials.

This was the first official visit of an Iranian delegation to the Latin American country over the past 30 years.

In late October, Chile's President Sebastian Pinera called for the expansion of Iran-Chile relations in areas of economy and culture.

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has expanded the country's cooperation with many Latin American countries since he took office in 2005.

According to statistics compiled by the International Monetary Fund, Iran's trade with Latin America has witnessed a considerable rise since 2008.
