Iranian, South African Officials Discuss Human Rights

Mohamad-Javad Larijani is the Head of Iran's Supreme Council for Human Rights. Currently in South Africa for a week-long visit, As part of his discussions here with the International Relations and Cooperation Ministry, South Africa raised a number of issues, which it says has been reported in the mainstream media about Iran's human rights record. One of the questions raised was about Iran's application of the death penalty...

Larijani says these drugs coming from Afghanistan are destined for Europe. He argues one of the simplest ways to reduce the number of executions, is for the West to join Iran in its efforts to combat drug-trafficking.

One of the key points highlighted by both countries is that because of the strong relationship between them, they can raise and discuss any issue in a friendly and constructive manner, even though they might differ on the same matter.

Now that South Africa has taken up a position as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and joined the BRICS economic group, which includes Russia and China since the beginning of 2011, South Africa says it will not pressure and will pursue an independent foreign policy. This includes Iran's rights to peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Both countries have now agreed to meet on an annual basis to discuss human rights issues. As part of their week-long visit, Larijani and a number of Iranian MP's will meet with the South African Parliament speaker, Justice Ministry and Commission on Gender Equality among others in the coming days.
