Pakistan ISI Chief Slams Bin Laden Raid

Ahmad Shuja Pasha told Pakistani lawmakers in a session on Saturday that ISI was close to catching bin Laden when the US special forces unilaterally carried out an attack on al-Qaeda leader's compound in Abbottabad.

The parliament members said in a resolution after the session that “unilateral actions cannot advance the global cause of elimination of terrorism,” AFP reported.

The lawmakers also warned the US that repeating such actions could have "dire consequences for peace and security in the region and the world."

Pakistan's air force chief Rao Qamar, addressing the lawmakers, denied reports that one of the reasons Pakistan was not able to respond to the US raid was because the radar systems were not working.

The lawmakers also urged the Pakistani government to "to appoint an independent commission on the Abbottabad operation, fix responsibility and recommend necessary measures to ensure that such an incident does not recur."

The parliament resolution also asked the government to review its cooperation with the US so that Pakistan's national interests will be guaranteed.

US President Barack Obama has claimed that bin Laden was killed by US forces on May 1 in a hiding compound in Pakistan.

The US has also rejected growing arguments that the US military effort against bin Laden in Pakistan was illegal, describing the operation as “an act of national self-defense.”

Former officials with Pakistan's military and intelligence service say the US wrongfully claims it has killed bin Laden in Pakistan as part of a scheme to invade the country for harboring the terrorist leader.
