Iran to Host ECO Ministerial Meeting

“Tehran will host the meeting of ECO's Planning Council on Tuesday,” IRNA quoted Seyyed Ali Mohammad Mousavi, head of the Iranian foreign ministry's international economic cooperation bureau as saying on Saturday.

He added that Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi will deliver an inauguration speech ahead of the three-day ECO meeting.

Mousavi further pointed out that the meeting will be held at the level of ministers and deputies of the member states.

The ECO is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey, which provides a platform to promote economic, technical and cultural cooperation among member states.

The organization was expanded in 1992 to include seven new members, namely Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

ECO members intend to establish a single market for goods and services, much like the European Union.

ECO secretariat and cultural department are located in Tehran while its economic bureau is located in Turkey and its scientific bureau is based in Pakistan.
