'Iran Top Priority in US Foreign Policy'

“The fact that the Pentagon is extensively monitoring Iran's economic situation, and the situation of internet and social networking sites in the country, proves that the Islamic Republic of Iran is a top priority for the US statesmen,” Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani was quoted by IRNA as saying on Monday.

The former presidential candidate also called for effective and deliberate measures to respond to challenges facing the Islamic Republic.

He said that threats in today's world are moving towards international terrorism, adding, “No country can be described as a terrorist state expect for the Zionist regime [of Israel].”

The former Iranian defense minister noted that the next decade will witness a major shift in the social networking. “Groups on social-networking Internet sites have various functions, and this calls for close and systematic monitoring of social networks in Iran,” Shamkhani stressed.

American officials say the Internet, and specifically social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, are providing the United States with critical information about Iran and are helping the White House to keep updated with the situation in the country.

This is while Iranian experts have ventured into the social-networking world, launching a site called Velayatmadaran (Followers of the Jurisprudent).

Velayatmadaran has proven to be a crucial tool for communication, discussion, and the exchange of news and information among members, and allows users to post pictures, videos, and articles.
