Iran Helping Boost Regional Unity: ECO

“The Islamic Republic of Iran makes a lot of effort to advance ECO's regional goals,” Mohammad Yahya Ma'roufi was quoted by IRNA as saying at an ECO gathering in Tehran on Tuesday.

“The decisions adopted at this gathering will determine ECO's activities in the future,” the ECO chief further explained.

“Fighting drugs, terrorism and organized crime are among ECO priorities,” he said.

Ma'roufi said trade is instrumental in upgrading regional cooperation and will guarantee economic development in the region.

He highlighted that ECO aims to form a bloc to enhance industrial and commercial progress in the region.

“This progress has come to a halt over the past three years, and we have not yet reached an agreement on issues such as customs privileges,” Ma'roufi said, adding that ECO members need to push the reset button in this regard.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the ECO secretary general elaborated on the progress that his organization has made in banking and transportation.

“In 2010, a symbolic Silk Road convoy traveled 11,000 kilometers, something which contributes to [the expansion of] regional transportation and promotion of cultural relations,” he underlined.

Ma'roufi said energy is the lifeblood of development in any country, adding that ECO has set in motion a five-year plan to speed up progress in the energy sector, which includes training workshops to further accelerate the progress of member states.
