actions to safeguard security in the oil-rich region.

Speaking at a meeting with Speaker of Kuwait's National Assembly Jassem Mohammad al-Kharafi in Kuwait City on Wednesday, Salehi described the Persian Gulf as "a vital artery" for the regional countries and the world.

He stressed the necessity for the protection of stability, security and tranquility in the Persian Gulf, and urged all the regional countries to practice close cooperation to safeguard its security and stability.

As regards Iran's stance, Salehi underscored Tehran's respect for the sovereignty and independence of the regional countries, and expressed the hope that other countries would respect the policy of non-interference in the other countries' internal affairs.

Al-Kharafi, too, stressed the importance of Iran's diplomatic initiative, and said Salehi's recent visit to the region will facilitate cooperation among the regional states.

He also called dialogue as the only solution to the ongoing problems in the region.

Salehi had earlier on Wednesday held a meeting with Kuwaiti Amir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahamd al-Sabah and the country's Prime Minister Nasir al-Muhammad al-Ahmad al-Sabah.

This is Salehi's fifth visit to the regional states during the last three weeks.

Salehi had earlier visited the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Iraq and met with their senior officials on bilateral ties and recent developments in the region, specially the revolution in Bahrain.
