government following two days of talks.

The negotiations were held in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, to “define the mechanisms of implementation of a Palestinian reconciliation deal," said an Egyptian statement released by the official MENA news agency on Tuesday.

The two factions signed a unity agreement earlier this month and vowed to hold presidential and legislative elections within a year.

"The meetings took place in a positive atmosphere, amid cooperation and understanding from both sides which reflects their desire to end their division as soon as possible," the statement said.

The factions declined to expound on the details of the meeting but said “the announcement of the government will come soon.”

Hamas and Fatah have been at odds since Gaza-based Hamas won the Palestinian parliamentary elections in January 2006.

Following Hamas's election victory, Fatah set up headquarters in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, thus limiting governance by Hamas to the Gaza Strip, a comparably smaller portion of Palestinian territories.
