Violence in Ireland as Queen Lays Wreath

Hundreds of protesters scuffled with riot police after supporters of dissident republicans began throwing fireworks, bottles and cans at the police, who have mounted the biggest ever security operation in the history of the state.

The visit, first by a British monarch in 100 years, marks the anniversary of the end of the British colonial rule of the Irish Island and is being held in the honor of all those who fought for Irish freedom from British rule.

There were reports suggesting that the Queen will make a formal apology to the Irish during her historic state visit. The Dublin government, however, played down the prospect of a comprehensive apology.

Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore, the Deputy Prime Minister said speculations about the Queen making an apology and whether or not it would be appropriate were different in terms of leader roles.

“There is a difference between what a head of state says and what the head of a government says, and I think that we shouldn't expect the head of a state, which in many ways is a kind of ceremonial role, to do the kind of things which are more appropriate for people in government,” he said.

After British Prime Minister David Cameron formally apologized last year for the atrocities his predecessors have done to the victims of the Bloody Sunday in Londonderry, there has been speculation the Queen would follow suit and make a formal apology.

The Queen was also expected to acknowledge the troubled history between the two countries during her speech at the Irish parliament.
