Kuwaiti Foreign Minister to Visit Iran

Sheikh Mohammad Al Sabah talked about his decision to visit Iran in an interview with Al-Alam news network late Wednesday, following his meeting with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi.

“Bilateral relations were discussed in this meeting. It was so agreed that a comprehensive agenda be set out and meetings continue for expanding bilateral ties,” the Kuwaiti official said.

“In my upcoming visit to Iran, I will pursue issues pertaining to bilateral ties,” he added.

Relations between Tehran and Kuwait were strained in 2010 over a row sparked by Kuwaiti claims that accused Iran of having links with what they called a spying cell operating in the oil-rich emirate.

In response, Tehran expressed "dismay" over the "irresponsible” remarks and raised questions about the real objectives behind the repetition of the claims in 2011.

Following his day-long tour of Kuwait, Salehi described his visit as "successful.”

"In talks with senior Kuwaiti officials, we discussed mutual issues very clearly,” he said, noting that they had managed to eliminate certain misunderstandings between the two sides.

Beside talks with his Kuwaiti counterpart, Salehi met with Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Jaber Al Sabah, National Assembly speaker Jassim al-Kharafi and Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser al-Mohammad Al Sabah during his stay in Kuwait City.

During his meeting with the Iranian minister, the Kuwaiti emir stressed that his country trusts “the good will and objectives of Iranian brothers” and highlighted the importance of relations with the Islamic Republic.

The Kuwaiti National Assembly speaker also stressed the need for visits by Iranian and Kuwaiti officials so that issues of concern could be clarified.
