Iran-Pakistan Ties Restore Security: Envoy

TEHRAN, May 19 (ICANA) – The Iranian envoy to Islamabad says more economic cooperation between Iran and Pakistan, two members of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), can restore regional security.

Mashallah Shakeri made the remark during a meeting on Iran-Pakistan relations at the Institute of Policy Studies in Islamabad, IRNA reported Thursday.

He said that security and development were closely interrelated and added, “We should boost economic ties and make use of the potential of the Economic Cooperation Organization for [restoring] stability and peace in the region.”

The Iranian envoy went on to say that Tehran is ready to fully expand cooperation with Islamabad in all areas and pointed out that Iran places no limit to the enhancement of ties with Pakistan.

Shakeri also said that Iran was ready to transfer electricity to Pakistan, adding that Iran can help Pakistan with energy and infrastructure problems.

Khurshid Ahmad, Chairman of Institute of Policy Studies Islamabad, also said that Iran and Pakistan should remain vigilant against the West's plots to sow division between regional countries and called for the development of bilateral ties.

Tanvir Ahmed Khan, Chairman of the Institute of Strategic Studies, also said that Iran and Pakistan could play a significant role in the Islamic world and called for more cooperation between the two countries despite US efforts to restrict Iran-Pakistan relations.
