US Warns Britain against Afghan Pullout

Prime Minister David Cameron was pushing the military to begin a pullout by July, the same time the US is planning to carry out a nominal withdrawal.

However, the US military is said to have cautioned Britain that a premature pullout could seriously damage the US-UK ties.

British officials have also confirmed the US warning, saying that the so-called “special relationship” between the two allies could be over if the Conservative premier does not commit to an open-ended involvement in the US-led war.

It seems Cameron only wishes to fulfill an election campaign slogan, for which he and the Tories were successful to use and win a general election after more than a decade in the opposition.

Cameron knows well that if he fails to end British involvement in Afghan war, he will never be able to win a second term in office. He therefore dismissed the US warnings in his speech to the parliament.

"I am sure the Americans completely understand that it is rather less than the reductions they are planning and we remain in one of the toughest parts of the country doing one of the most difficult jobs. We are the second biggest contributor, after the United States," he said.

The premier also rejected publicly the UK military chiefs' opposition to budget cuts, and their calls for more military spending.

“The defence chiefs will always want more”, Cameron said, adding that he was “not frightened” to contradict the nation's military leaders in public.

The comments further exposed the public differences of opinion between the top leaders of Britain's military and the Prime Minister.
