Iran Proposes Regional Anti-Graft Center

“Some of the corruption that has caused troubles for the nations certainly has to be dealt with regionally,” IRNA quoted Pourmohammadi as saying on Saturday.

The Iranian official made the remark on the sidelines of the first ECO anti-corruption meeting in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Pourmohammadi said the main objectives of the two-day ECO meeting are regional campaigns against corruption, drug trafficking, smuggling, human trafficking, money laundering, and organized crimes.

“Succeeding in these campaigns will not be possible except through regional and international interaction,” he went on to say.

The first anti-corruption meeting of the ECO member states was inaugurated in Tehran on Saturday.

“Regarding the emphasis of the United Nations anti-corruption commission and Iran's innovation, this conference has been held for the first time in Iran with the presence of ECO member states,” Pourmohammadi noted.

ECO is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey, and provides a platform to promote economic, technical and cultural cooperation among member states.

The organization was expanded in 1992 to include Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan as its seven new members.

ECO members intend to establish a single market for goods and services, much like the European Union.
