Ahmadinejad to Introduce Youth Minister

“Announcing the Youth and Sports minister is on the president's agenda and the suggested minister will be introduced to Majlis (parliament) at the first proposed opportunity,” Mohammad-Reza Mir-Tajeddini said on Monday.

The vice president did not mention a specific announcement date and said the new minister's list of responsibilities had to be drafted and approved by parliament.

In January, the Iranian parliament voted for the establishment of a new government ministry called the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

According to the ratified proposal, the new ministry was to be formed by merging the National Youth Organization and the Physical Education Organization.

The country's first Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi criticized the legislation, arguing that it imposes further financial costs and responsibilities on the government.

Many officials and experts in Iran's athletic departments have also voiced concern about the convergence of the two organizations as counterproductive, sharing the position of President Ahmadinejad's administration.
