Key Senate Democrats and Republicans formally introduced the bipartisan resolution on Monday, endorsing US military action in the North African country and asking the US President Barack Obama to clarify his policy-objectives regarding Libya, Reuters reported.

Drawn up by veteran Senators John McCain, a Republican, and Democrat John Kerry, the resolution "supports the limited use of military force by the United States in Libya as part of the NATO mission to enforce United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973.”

"I support President Obama's decision to commit US forces to the mission in Libya, and I hope this resolution will elicit a broad statement of bipartisan support among my Senate colleagues for our use of force in Libya," said McCain on Monday.

It also calls on Obama to inform Congress about his objectives in Libya both during and after the rule of Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, urging him to explore ways to use frozen assets of the Libyan government to cover the expenses of the military intervention in the North African country.

Earlier in March, NATO started an aerial military campaign on Libya to implement Resolution 1973, officially intended to protect civilian lives.

Following an initial engagement, Obama later announced that the US handed over command of the operations to NATO and would only provide logistical support for the mission.
