MP: 9/11 Pretext for US Blame Game in ME

“After the September 11 [incidents], the US accused (slain al-Qaeda leader Osama) bin Laden with playing a role in the events and used the issue as a pretext to attack Afghanistan (in 2001),” said Chairman of Iran's Majlis (parliament) Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Boroujerdi.

“However, in addition to Washington's false accusations against Iran, evidence indicate that the United States, itself, had been the root cause of the attacks,” he added.

The Iranian legislator further explained that US propaganda and media publicity is mainly aimed at playing a blame game in the Middle East region.

Boroujerdi reiterated that the alleged killing of bin Laden left no pretext for the US and Western powers to remain in the region.

US President Barack Obama claimed that bin Laden was killed by US forces on May 2 in a hiding compound in Pakistan. He added that the military mission was conducted without the knowledge of Pakistani authorities due to US mistrust of their purported South Asia ally.

Moreover, a number of former US military personnel and commanders have also stated that bin Laden was killed in a major bombing during the early stages of the US-led invasion of Afghanistan.

The US invaded Afghanistan with the official objective of curbing militancy and bringing peace and stability to the region. However, after over nine years, the region remains unstable and militancy has expanded to Pakistan.
