Russian Opposition Picks up Steam ahead Of Elections

Its leaders say documents have been sent to the Justice Ministry and it's more than just an official step.

The Party of People's Freedom was set up last year by four fierce Kremlin critics: Boris Nemtsov, Vladimir Ryzhkov, Mikhail Kasyanov and Vladimir Milov.

They condemn the policies of the current leadership and advocate profound political, economic and social reforms.

If registered, the party vows to take part in the parliamentary election in December and presidential election in March.

It targets voters among 15 million educated Russians living in mid-sized and big cities.

The party's main slogan is for Russia without lawlessness and corruption.

The Justice Ministry will reply in a month whether the new party can be registered.

The opposition leaders seem convinced the answer will be positive.

But observers are skeptical.

Some say it will not be registered as the party lacks financial, organizational and technological resources for attracting enough supporters.

The new party calls for reducing the presidential term from 6 to 4 years and banning one person from holding the post for more than two terms.

Its leaders also want the release of former Yukos head Mikhail Khodorkovsky whom they call a political prisoner.
