Salehi: Iran Ready for Nuclear Talks

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is always prepared to hold fair and just negotiations based on mutual respect with other parties within the framework of mutual interests,” Ali Akbar Salehi was quoted by IRNA as saying on Wednesday.

Salehi made the remarks during an address at the 16th conference of foreign ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in the island of Bali in Indonesia on Wednesday.

“Iran is committed to the NPT — Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty — and other treaties on weapons of mass destruction, and at the same time, it is determined to enjoy its rights based on these treaties,”

Salehi added.

The Iranian FM said the fact that hegemonic powers continue to maintain and develop “tactical and strategic nuclear” weapons and draw up “new military doctrines” undermines the security of all nations.

The top Iranian official said Israel's refusal to join the NPT is the reason why Iran's 1975 proposal to rid the Middle East of nuclear weapons has not been realized.

Unlike Israel, Iran is a signatory to the NPT and has been cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency, which has confirmed Iran's non-diversion towards a military nuclear program in its numerous reports.

Israel, which is widely believed to be among the world's biggest possessors of nuclear arms, maintains a policy of deliberate ambiguity over its nuclear work and continues to defy international calls to join the NPT.
