Certain “individuals claim that (Iran's) Cultural Heritage, (Handicrafts and Tourism) Organization (ICHTO) issues licenses for the construction of hotels, and regard this as a crime,” said President Ahmadinejad in a ceremony to bid farewell to the former ICHTO chief, Hamid Baqaei, IRNA reported.

“If such a move is a crime, we take pride in it,” the Iranian chief executive went on to say.

The website Alef, which belongs to an Iranian lawmaker, recently accused Baqaei and president's chief of staff Esfandiyar Rahim-Mashaei of using their influence to grant a hotel construction project to a company whose shares the two officials were said to hold.

The site also claimed that the government has given the land of the hotel project to the company totally gratis.

However, President Ahmadinejad reacted to the accusations, saying, “In all countries, facilities, lands and cheap loans are given for building hotels and infrastructures but unfortunately, in our country license for construction of hotels has turned into a crime.”

Alef responded to Ahmadinejad's remarks and said it does not oppose granting license for hotel construction but opposes “the uncalculated and fraudulent granting of major economic projects to a circle of friends.”

President Ahmadinejad further explained that Baqaei is under widespread criticism since he left the ICHTO and became the vice president for executive affairs, and added that issues are raised about him, which previously went unannounced.

On Saturday, Iran's Administrative Justice Court convicted Baqaei of committing a violation some five years ago and announced a verdict suspending the former ICHTO chief from assuming government positions for four years.

However, Baqaei dismissed the ruling and said he would lodge an appeal against the verdict.
