MP Calls for Development of Trade Cooperation with Afghanistan

TEHRAN, May 26 (ICANA) – A senior Iranian lawmaker urged the officials in Tehran and Kabul to intensify their efforts to further increase mutual cooperation between the two countries, specially in trade and economic fields.

Head of Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi made the remarks in Kabul Wednesday in a meeting with President Hamid Karzai, saying that Iran is ready for transferring its achievements in scientific and self-sufficiency fields to Afghanistan.

Boroujerdi who had arrived in Afghanistan on Wednesday afternoon in his meeting with the President of Afghanistan first delivered the IRI President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's written message to his counterpart, which was inviting him to attend the Tehran Conference on International Campaign against Terrorism.

He meanwhile referred to the numerous historical, religious and cultural commonalties of the two nations, as well as the two nations' shared languages, arguing, "During numerous meetings between the two countries' presidents the two sides have shown strong will for expansion of comprehensive bilateral relations at all dimensions."

Emphasizing that that is also true incase of bilateral cooperation, he said, "The trade volume between the two countries has been announced to be over one billion US dollars, and there are still lots of unused potentials for further expansion of trade.

President Karzai, too in the meeting referred to the two countries' various cultural and religious commonalties, reiterating, "Afghanistan has always tried to maintain and expand its relations with its neighbors."

The Afghan President referred to the beginning of a nationwide peace process in his country, emphasizing, "We will by no means permit things happen in Afghanistan to impose threats against the regional countries."

He said, "Afghanistan trusts Iran maximally and Islamic Republic of Iran's contributions to the reconstruction of Afghanistan have been operational and practical."

Boroujerdi and Karzai at the end exchanged viewpoints on the latest regional developments.

The head of the IRI Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission arrived in Kabul atop a parliamentary delegation and is scheduled to meet a number of other high ranking Afghan officials during his couple of days in this country.
