Iran Most Trustworthy Afghan Partner: Karzai

“Afghanistan places greatest trust in Iran, and the aid by the Islamic Republic of Iran for the reconstruction of Afghanistan has been practical and operational,” Karzai said in a meeting with Chairman of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi in Kabul on May 25.

He referred to cultural commonalities of the two neighboring countries, insisting on Kabul's resolve to maintain extensive ties with neighboring countries.

“We will never allow anything to turn Afghanistan into a threat against regional countries,” the Afghan president went on to say.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi, who heads an Iranian parliamentary mission to Afghanistan, expressed Iran's readiness to provide the country with its expertise and experiences to achieve self-sufficiency.

Referring to the areas of bilateral cooperation, the senior Iranian lawmaker reiterated that both countries are firmly committed to expand ties in all fields.

Afghanistan has been ravaged by years of a US-led occupation and war that has crippled its economy and aggravated living conditions in the Asian country.

Since the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001, tens of thousands of Afghan civilians have reportedly lost their lives as a consequence of displacement, starvation, lack of medical treatment, crimes and lawlessness resulting from the war.
