Iran FM Urges Enhanced Ties with Brunei

TEHRAN, May 28 (ICANA) - Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has called for the expansion of ties with Brunei in different areas in a meeting with Brunei Sultan Hassan Bolkiah.

Salehi said that Iran and Brunei enjoyed good relations and called for the expansion of mutual cooperation in various areas, IRNA reported on Saturday.

The top Iranian diplomat said that Iran and Brunei could develop cooperation in tourism, hygiene, education and joint ventures and called for the exchange of expert delegations between the two countries to further explore areas of cooperation.

The Sultan of Brunei, for his part, hailed achievements of the Islamic Republic and said Iran is well respected by many countries, including Brunei.

He also welcomed the expansion of ties with the Islamic Republic in various areas, including hygiene and education.

Salehi also conveyed the message of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the Sultan of Brunei.

The Iranian foreign minister traveled to Brunei's capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, on Friday to hold talks with officials of the Southeast Asian country.

Salehi traveled to Brunei after his trip to Indonesia to attend the 16th ministerial meeting of the 118-member Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

On the sidelines of the meeting, Salehi met with senior officials from NAM member states, including Brunei Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Mohamed Bolkiah.

In the meeting, Salehi said the consultations between Iran and Brunei would play an effective role in efforts to adopt a common and appropriate stance on regional and international developments and said Iran is ready to provide technical and educational services to Brunei.
