Egypt Releases Iranian Diplomat

The Iranian diplomat was released after two hours in custody, Moslehi said on Sunday.

Earlier on Sunday, the Saudi-owned satellite television channel Al-Arabiya, claimed that Egypt's Security Prosecution had arrested an Iranian diplomat on charges of espionage.

Egypt's intelligence apparatus, comprised of the elements of former Egyptian ruler Hosni Mubarak and affiliated with the former head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Directorate Omar Suleiman, was the only organization that its main agents were not changed after the revolution.

It appears that they arrested the Iranian diplomat without the knowledge of Egypt's Foreign Ministry to create media hype against Iran.

According to Egypt's official news agency, MENA, the detainee was released after the Foreign Ministry Security Prosecution learned that “he was a diplomat with the Iranian mission.”

Iran severed ties with Egypt after Cairo signed the 1978 Camp David Accords with the Israeli regime and offered asylum to Iran's deposed monarch Mohammad-Reza Pahlavi.

The post-revolution Egypt looks poised to turn a new page in its relations with the Islamic Republic as the top Egyptian diplomat, Arabi, said his country would witness a new phase in its ties with Iran.

Earlier in April, the Egyptian foreign minister called for the normalization of ties with Iran, saying Cairo is committed to seeking to improve its long-frozen relations with Tehran.
