FM: West Seeking to Challenge Iran by Misusing Human Rights Issue

"Over the past thirty years, Western countries have been creating challenges for the Islamic Republic of Iran through different methods. And now they have put a lot of effort to introduce human rights issues as the next challenge to the country," Salehi said in an expert meeting on human rights here in Tehran on Wednesday.

Iran has presented a new model for governance and political thoughts and since the model is a rival to Western-style ones, Western countries have initiated a massive propaganda campaign against Iran, Salehi said, adding that human rights was one of the issues used against the Islamic Republic.

He underlined the need for international monitoring of human rights violations in Western countries and added that the Iranian Foreign Ministry will actively pursue the issue.

Meantime, Secretary-General of Iran's High Council of Human Rights Mohammad Javad Larijani underlined Iran's commitment to international human rights rules and treaties despite a number of reservations.

"We will remain committed to our undertakings. Our basic stance is based on respecting the treaties that we have already signed," Larijani said, addressing an expert meeting on human rights here in Tehran on Wednesday.

"We never violate a treaty, rather we nullify it if we need to, and then we declare our decision since we are free to do that," Larijani stated.

He, meantime, said that documents on human rights have been drafted and adopted by secular lawyers and thinkers and without the involvement of non-secular sides.

"We have accepted and signed parts of these documents and we have questions about them, if we had been the author of these documents we would have replaced them with other documents," Larijani added.

Iran has always lashed out at the western countries for using human rights issues as a tool and pretext for pressurizing independent states to conceal their own crimes and wrong deeds.
