Iranians Support MENA Uprisings

Hundreds of Iranians have gathered outside the UN office in Tehran, voicing their support for the people of Bahrain, Libya and Yemen.

The protesters condemned the brutal crackdown on demonstrators in Bahrain and Yemen and the killing of Libyan civilians by Muammar Gaddafi's regime and NATO forces.

Hojjatoleslam Nasireddin Yaqoubi, speaking on behalf of the voluntary Basij clerics, said on Thursday that “the world cannot resist the power of God and Islam.”

“The global arrogance is engaged in the genocide of people in Yemen, Bahrain and Libya to avenge the power of Islam but it should know that God will eventually avenge the blood which has been [unfairly] spilled,” he was quoted by IRNA as saying.

Yaqoubi said the UN has turned into a “tool” in the hands of arrogant powers and turned a blind eye to the democracy-seeking people of Bahrain, Yemen and Libya.

Anti-government protesters in Bahrain have been calling for political reforms since February 14, originally demanding an end to the Al Khalifa regime.

Dozens of people have been killed in the regime's deadly crackdown. Hundreds of people, including medical doctors, nurses, teachers and other professionals, have also been detained, harassed and even tortured for helping or sympathizing with protesters.

In Yemen, hundreds of thousands of people have turned out for near daily demonstrations in major cities since late January, calling for an end to corruption and unemployment as well as demanding the ouster of Saleh, who has been ruling the country since 1978.

Since mid-February, Libya has been the scene of fierce fighting between Gaddafi loyalists and revolutionary forces, who have been demanding an end to Gaddafi's decades-long rule.
