Service :

US on the Wrong Track on Iran: Hersh

In an interview with The New Yorker magazine published on June 3, Hersh said that the US, despite using advanced surveillance technology and Iranian informants, has failed to come up with any conclusive evidence that Iran has been moving enriched uranium to an underground weapon-making center, and therefore has wrong ideas about Iran's nuclear capabilities.

He added, "The Iranians are enriching to about 3.7 or so percent to run civilian power plants. But everything that's being enriched is under camera, under watch, by the IAEA. There's just no sign of any diversion. There's just no evidence. It doesn't mean that we shouldn't watch what they do. But it does mean that we're sort of beating a dead horse here."

He stated that former Vice President Dick Cheney was responsible for what happened when he was in power, noting that he built up an ugly world of war that still exists, a frightening world that does not have much to do with what the US Constitution calls for.

During the George W. Bush administration years, Hersh was widely criticized by White House officials for his exposés on torture at Abu Ghraib, secret US operations overseas, and US policy on Iran. Now it is the Obama White House that is upset about what Hersh has said.
