Democratic New York Congressman Anthony Weiner made the confession in a New York City news conference on Monday, the Associated Press reported.

“I have not been honest with myself, my family, my constituents, my friends, and supporters and the media," Weiner said.

"Last Friday night I tweeted a photograph of myself that I intended to send as a direct message as part of a joke to a woman in Seattle."

Democratic leaders in the US House of Representatives expressed disappointment and embarrassment over the incident, which might cause an erosion of support for the 46-year-old Congressman.

Weiner had repeatedly denied in television interviews last week that he had sent the photo, saying it was likely a prank.

Asked by a reporter if he planned to resign, Weiner said, "I am deeply regretting what I have done and I am not resigning."

House Democratic Minority leader Nancy Pelosi issued a statement on Monday in which she called for an ethics committee investigation into whether Weiner broke House rules and misused official resources.

During Monday's half-hour news conference, Weiner also admitted to posting pictures and texts to six women over the past three years.

Weiner has been viewed as a rising star within the Democratic Party in the US. He has been a popular champion of liberal causes such as universal health care.
