Obama Approval Hits New Low: Poll

According to a Washington Post-ABC News poll released on Tuesday, public disapproval of Obama's handling of the economy amid the country's growing budget deficit has reached new highs, Reuters reported.

Fifty-nine percent of participants in the poll gave Obama negative marks for his handling of the economy. The figure is up from 55 percent a month earlier, while the president's approval rating on the deficit issue hit a new low of 33 percent, down six points since April.

As high gasoline prices, sliding home values and high unemployment numbers have increased concerns about the pace of the US economic recovery, critics say the survey reflects a pessimistic public mood in the United States.

Obama's re-election in 2012 may depend on his ability to convince voters that his economic policies have been successful.

However, the poll shows 89 percent of Americans say the economy is in bad shape; 57 percent say economic recovery has not started and 66 percent believe the United States is seriously on the wrong track.

Forty-five percent of those polled say they trust congressional Republicans over Obama for handling the economy. The poll shows Obama in a fierce competition with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who is ahead of Obama by three percentage points, 49 versus 46 percent , among registered voters.

Republican Romney launched his second presidential campaign last week. He says Obama's policies have failed to solve the country's many economic woes.
