Turkey to Vote in Parliamentary Polls

The campaign election is fanned by volunteers who have spilled into the streets of Istanbul a day before the country heads to the polls.

Turkey's ruling party, the Justice and Development Party (AKP) headed by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is vying with the main opposition, the secular Republican People's Party (CHP) as well as the Nationalist Movement Party.

AKP is widely expected to secure the majority of the vote and win a third successive term in office.

Erdogan has promised to draft a new constitution to enhance individual freedoms and strengthen Turkish democracy.

Candidates from 15 parties along with many independent candidates are standing for Turkey's 550-seat parliament election.

More than 50 million people are eligible to cast their ballots in the elections.

The ruling party has promoted reforms since taking the helm of power in 2002.

His supporters say Erdogan's party can revive Turkey's economy which is now second to China among the G-20 nations.
