Majlis to Review Sanctioning US Officials

Iranian MP, Foreign Policy Committee, Mahmoud Ahmadi Bighash: “We will be considering punitive measures against them and I am certain that everyone present in that session will vote for… it is important to realize that this is completely in line with recent international developments and the popular uprisings … it is a gesture that empowers those like the Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki to stand up for the rights of their people and not be intimidated by the false façade of imperialism”.

The officials on the list include current Guantanamo commander Rear Admiral Jeffery Harbeson, former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, commander of US forces in Iraq Raymond Odierno, former FBI chief Thomas J. Pickard, USS Vincennes Captain Will Rogers III for killing 290 Iranian civilians on board Iran Air Flight 655, which was shot down on July 3, 1988.

Iranian MP, Foreign Policy Committee, Mehdi Sanaei: “Well these sanctions include both practical measures that will be taking against those on the list while it is also a symbolic move to show the world that those who claim to be advocates of human rights have a very poor human rights record themselves… and it is wrong to think that only certain countries have the right to make such judgments”.

Earlier Amnesty International censured the US for its indefinite detentions of suspects in Afghanistan and at the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba. In October 2010, the United Nations Human Rights Council issued a report in which it expressed serious concern about human rights violations in the United States

The Iranian parliament's initiative is meant to highlight the fact that Human Rights is an issue that needs to be investigated by independent bodies and groups where political interests don't affect the judgments.

The plan is yet to be discussed in an open session in the parliament and if ratified punitive measures will be taken against the 26 US officials for violating human rights.
