Iran Congratulates Turkey on Vote Win

In a message on Sunday night, President Ahmadinejad praised the third consecutive election victory of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Turkey.

In addition, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi also extended congratulations to his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu during a phone call late on Sunday.

The Iranian foreign minister expressed hope that Tehran-Ankara ties would expand further expand during the AKP's third term in office.

In his turn, Davutoglu said the prospect of an expansion in ties between Iran and Turkey is very encouraging.

Turkey's ruling party clinched a record landslide victory in Sunday's parliamentary polls, but fell short of a majority large enough to change the constitution.

Based on results from 99% of the ballots counted, Erdogan has collected over 50 percent of the votes, with his party set to secure around 326 out of 550 seats in the parliament, which is less than the 330 needed to hold a referendum on a re-written constitution, Turkish media reported.

More than 50 million people were eligible to cast their ballots in the elections.
