Iran to Decide Fate of Three US Nationals

Tehran's Prosecutor-General Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi said that the next trial session of the three US nationals charged with illegal entry to Iran and espionage may be held by late August.

Dolatabadi expressed optimism that the verdict over the case would be issued at the session.

"We are hopeful that the final decision on the case of the three American nationals would be made at the session," he said.

He did not elaborate on the exact date for the next court session or what the verdict would be.

Bauer and Fattal, both 27, along with Shourd, 31, were detained at an Iranian border region in July 2009 after illegally crossing the border from the mountains of northern Iraq's Kurdistan region.

Iran released Shourd on a bail of $500,000 in September 2010, 14 months after her arrest. The decision was taken due to the detainee's health condition.

They were later charged with espionage after Tehran prosecutor's office announced that it possessed "compelling evidence" indicating that the three Americans were cooperating with US intelligence agencies.
