Russian, Iranian Presidents Meet in Astana

TEHRAN, June 15 (ICANA) – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met with Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Wednesday.

Russian, Iranian Presidents Meet in Astana

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 10th heads-of-state summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in the Kazakh capital city.

At the meeting, the two presidents discussed the latest developments in bilateral ties, and explored avenues for the further expansion of mutual cooperation.

Ahmadinejad and Medvedev also exchanged views over major world issues, specially the status quo in the region and uprisings by a number of regional nations.

The Iranian president arrived in Astana on Tuesday and met with a number of regional leaders, including his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev and the country's Prime Minister Karim Masimov as well as the Chinese, Afghan and Pakistani presidents.

During the meetings, the Iranian president and the regional leaders reviewed bilateral relations and discussed the latest developments in the region and the world.

Iran currently holds an observer status in the group and applied for full membership in a request filed on March 24, 2008.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an intergovernmental organization which was founded in 2001 in Shanghai, China, by the Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Russian, Tajik, Uzbek and Chinese heads of state.

SCO member governments include China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, as well as four formally designated observer countries, namely Iran, India, Mongolia and Pakistan.
