EP Resolution Links Kashmir Issue with FTA

According to reports appearing in Srinagar press, the EP resolution of May 11, 2011 stresses that human rights, democracy and security are essential elements of the relationship between EU and India.

“Therefore we call on both the sides to ensure that dialogue on open issues is stepped up with particular reference to Kashmir,” Greater Kashmir newspaper quoting from the resolution reported today.

New Delhi has so far neither denied nor confirmed the reports.

The resolution for expediting the dialogue over Kashmir dispute came in the wake of visits by various EU diplomatic delegations to Kashmir.

An EU delegation, comprising of EU Ambassador to India Daniele Smadja, Irish Ambassador Kenneth Thompson, Belgian Ambassador Pierre Vaesan, EU delegation’s First Secretary Philipp Gross and delegation attache Anne Vaugier-Chatterjee visited Kashmir last month and met top pro-independence leadership.

Earlier, the EU had termed Kashmir as ‘world’s most beautiful prison’. Its Parliament had also passed a resolution in 2008 asking New Delhi to urgently ensure independent and impartial investigations into all suspected sites of mass graves in Kashmir and as an immediate first step to secure the grave sites in order to preserve the evidence.

Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq while welcoming the EP resolution of linking FTA with Kashmir said, “This is a positive development as far as the Kashmir dispute is concerned. We have been seeking their facilitation for resolving the dispute.”

“I met different parliamentarians of EU during my visit to Brussels in first week of May and apprised them about different aspects of Kashmir dispute,” he told a local news gathering agency KNS.
