UK, NATO Urge More Pressure on Gaddafi

“They (Rasmussen and Cameron) agreed that NATO should continue to ramp up the pressure on Gaddafi,” a spokesman from Cameron's Downing Street office said on Wednesday, AFP reported.

The NATO chief and the British premier noted that “NATO had significantly degraded Gaddafi's military ability” and “committed to maintaining the operation until the Libyan people are free to determine their own future,” the spokesman added.

Rasmussen and Cameron held a meeting in London and discussed the situation in Libya and Afghanistan.

Cameron said that NATO, the UN, the Arab League and a large number of countries are supporting the Libya mission.

However, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a security alliance led by China and Russia and including Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, issued a statement on Wednesday calling for an end to NATO campaign in Libya.

“Domestic conflicts and crises have to be regulated exclusively by peaceful means, through political dialogue,” the group said in Astana, Kazakhstan, where it is holding a summit.

Also on Wednesday, Russia's Ambassador to NATO Dmitry Rogozin said that NATO is sliding into a ground war in Libya and trying to kill Gaddafi.
